The European internal energy market will only become a reality if Europe‘s governments rigorously pursue expansion of a joint infrastructure. Natural gas and transmission networks will play a major role in that, since gas and power grids will be networked even more closely as a result of the technology of the future “power to gas.” Germany‘s location at the heart of Europe makes it predestined as an energy hub. Consequently, its government has a special part to play in creating the political and regulatory conditions to offer companies sufficient incentive to invest. However, a permissible question must also be: Might a “core Europe” in the field of energy be necessary as a first step?
