Regenerative heating systems are coming increasingly into use in steel industry reheating furnaces. The basic principle of this technology has been known for a long time. The concept was intensively further developed during the 1990s, in the context of a Japanese research program for the introduction of high-temperature combustion in reheating furnaces. Regenerative burner technology presents an attractive alternative for cost reductions for furnace operators, in view of continuously rising fuel prices and the future emission trading systems. This article examines the use of regenerative burners in existing furnaces.
