Oxy-fuel combustion, i.e. the combustion of fuel with oxygen instead of air, may cause strong nitrous oxides formation if there is any molecular nitrogen in the furnace. N2 sources in the furnace might be nitrogen traces in natural gas or impurities in the oxygen flow. Nevertheless, sophisticated burner design, based on reaction kinetics simulations and detailed experimental investigations, allow for acceptable NOx emissions even when strongly N2-contaminated oxygen is used.
