With the anticipation of a growing production of biogas and the subsequent, expected introduction of biomethane (upgraded biogas) to the Danish natural gas grid, it was investigated which constraints were necessary in order to keep the existing grid safe. The steel grid was considered most vulnerable to the change in gas composition. Based on model calculation of corrosion it was possible to determine the crucial parameters and it was possible to prepare a set of requirements for biomethane. These requirements have subsequently laid the ground for the Danish formal regulations stated by the authorities.
