Heat treatment, hardening and the industrial furnace design require heat-resistant steels of centrifugal and mold castings. Annealing and hardening temperatures of over 1000 °C and the demands on furnace technology require alloy compositions and adapted casting processes that meet the requirements in these thermal limit ranges. On the one hand, the expert knowledge of materials science/alloy theory must be combined with the expert knowledge of primary forming, i.e. foundry technology in the static and dynamic design of the components. This article provides an overview of the challenges of selecting heat-resistant steels as cast components and their use in heat treatment and industrial furnace construction.
