Deep case carburizing process (carburizing at case depths of about 2.5...8 mm) applied to large bearings elements, gears and pinions which are subject to high mechanical stresses is requested increasingly by industry. To realize deep case carburizing technologies it is compulsory to establish the optimal correlations between process parameters as well as to design and use the most appropriate equipment for thermochemical processing of large batches. The article aims to highlight the influence of the process parameters – carburizing temperature, carbon potential and holding time on carburizing case depth and to outline by comparison the advantages of performing deep case carburizing in pit furnaces and bell type furnaces.
