The paramount emphasis in current development is on the production of efficient, and therefore environmentally safer, but also increasingly more powerful engines. Targets include ever more lightweight designs and the achievement of higher ignition pressures. In parallel, simpler and thus more cost-efficient, production methods are also to be sought. Various engine concepts based on light-alloy engine blocks made of aluminium-silicon alloys have become established in recent years in this field. Conventional engines of grey cast iron are subject to ever greater competition as a result of these developments.
