With reference to selected applications from the steel industry and environmental technology, the excellent chemical, physical and thermomechanical properties of aluminium silicate wool (ALSITRA) and polycrystalline wool (ALTRA), these are belonging to the group of high-temperature insulation wools (HTIW) are demonstrated. Relative to the specific application, every refractory material has both technological and economic advantages and disadvantages. The correct selection of the refractory products and their appropriate use necessitates the cooperation of the plant operator with the kiln or furnace supplier as well as the refractories supplier in partnership. In many cases a combination of refractory materials to meet the specific needs is selected as the optimum technical and economic solution. With regard to investment cost, operating expenses, reliability, overall efficiency and the fast availability of the equipment following relining or maintenance and repair work, products made from high-temperature insulation wool (HTIW) boast significant advantages compared to traditional refractory products.
