The paper deals with the analysis and the design of a transverse flux inductor system capable to heat uniformly thin metal strips of different widths without movable inductor parts or yokes. The result is achieved by the space control of the induced power density distribution, obtained by optimization of the amplitudes and phases of the currents supplying different inductor coils. Due to the confidentiality of the obtained results, the purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of the method rather than giving specific design figures. The inductor analysed is characterized by six coils independently supplied suited for uniform heating of non magnetic steel strips with different width ranging from 500 to 1,000 mm.
